Abstract:

This dataset belongs to a survey conducted for the purpose of a doctoral study at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The survey maps external knowledge sourcing and innovation activities of the minerals company in Norway over the three-year period from 2013 through 2015. The data will be made openly available after the results have been published in a recognised scientific journal, but no later than January 1st 2019.

Methodology and Processing

Sampling Procedure:

Firms operating in the four non-energy sectors of the minerals industry serve as the empirical setting for this survey. These firms are classified under divisions 7 (mining of metal ores) and 8 (other mining and quarrying) of International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) as published by United Nations (2008). I searched for these two categories of firms listed in the Norwegian register of business enterprises (Foretaksregisteret), where all firms are required by law to register. This search has resulted in 690 hits (in October 2015). From this, I shortlisted 193 firms based on two criteria: first, their establishment date must have been latest on January 2013, since the survey covers innovation activities in the 3-years period 2013-2015. Second, in accordance with established innovation surveys such as CIS, they must have had five or more employees that is considered as a rough proxy for having a certain degree of human resources available for innovation and stakeholder engagement.

Mode of Data Collection:

Online questionnaire in Questback (An overview of the questions is presented in the 'Descriptions' file appended to the data set)
