Abstract:

Kaum eine sprachliche Struktur des Russischen wird so kontrovers diskutiert wie der Verbalaspekt: Welche Verben können Aspektkorrelationen bilden? Was gilt als Aspektpaar? Zu diesen und anderen Fragen geben Aspektolog/innen eine Vielzahl verschiedener Antworten. Aber wie ist die komplexe Kategorie in den Köpfen der Russischsprecher/innen selbst verankert? Diese Perspektive und damit eine psycholinguistische Herangehensweise wird in dem vorliegenden Buch aufgegriffen. Im Zentrum der Monographie stehen zwei empirisch-experimentelle Untersuchungen mit mehr als hundert erwachsenen Russischsprecher/innen. Das Spektrum der verwendeten Methoden erstreckt sich von der Korpusanalyse über die Arbeit mit Pseudowörtern bis hin zu Kategorisierungsverfahren. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen lassen die Grundzüge einer mentalen Repräsentation des Aspekts erkennen, die am besten mit funktional orientierten Aspekttheorien kongruiert. Nicht nur telische Ereignisverben wie otkryt’ (pf) – otkryvat’ (ipf) ,öffnenʻ, sondern auch atelische Verlaufsverben wie plakat’ (ipf) ,weinenʻ mit ihren po- und za-präfigierten Derivaten werden von den befragten Personen als grammatische Aspektkorrelationen wahrgenommen. Überhaupt gehört das Partnerbildungsverfahren der Präfigierung offenbar ebenso fest zur mentalen Repräsentation des Aspekts wie die Suffigierung, es genießt sogar eine besondere Prominenz. In dieser Datenbank werden die der Monographie zugrunde liegenden Daten zur Korpusanalyse von 500 russischen Verben, zum Pseudopartnerexperiment und zum Kartenexperiment zur Verfügung gestellt.

This file contains the data referred to in chapter 5.5.2 (Die Bedeutsamkeit des Unterschieds zwischen Aspektpartnern) of my thesis. An experiment called "card experiment" (Kartenexperiment) was developed for the purpose of investigating firstly the functional and semantic differences Russian native speakers assign to the members of an aspectual pair and secondly the significance they adjudge to this difference. Especially the latter (i.e. significance of the semantic difference between the members of an aspectual pair, e.g. on otkryl - on otkryval) was examined through the comparison of differences between other grammatical forms (e.g. differing in gender or tense) and pairs of words related by lexical word formation (e.g. on otkryl - otkryvalka). The experiment is called "card experiment" because the participants were confronted with ten pairs of cards, each of which was imprinted with a word form from the same word family (4 versions of the experiment with 4 different word families exist: otkryt’, prosit’, plakat’, polozhit’). One of the cards from each pair was imprinted with the so-called "anchor form" (on otkryl, on prosil, on plakal, on polozhil). The form printed on the second card from each pair varied. It was either another grammatical (among these the aspectual) form from the same verb or a lexical derivative. The participants’ task was to go through all of the word pairs, firstly to describe the functional and/or semantic differences between their meanings and secondly to position the cards from each pair in a certain distance, so as to symbolize the significance assigned to the meaning difference by the participant. For a meaning difference of low significance participants were supposed to place the cards in a small distance, accordingly, for a difference of higher significance the distance between the two cards was expected to be bigger (for a more detailed description of the study design see chapter 5.2 (Untersuchungskonzeption) of my thesis). 121 adult Russian native speakers took part in this experiment. The participants’ work was recorded by a camera. I analyzed the final picture and established a rank order of distance sizes (1-10). The first, second, third and fourth sheets of this file (ordered by word family) contain the resulting raw data, i.e. the rank orders for each participant. Column A gives the participants’ ID. Columns B-K contain the ranks for each word pair, entitled by their relationship. Identical columns for all sheets are: Gender (B), infinitive (C) and tense (D). The positions of mood, participle, verbal noun, aspect (in case of plakat’ this relationship requires three columns for three different prefixed derivatives) and individual lexical derivatives differ among the 4 word families. Equal distances are treated with equal (mean) ranks. The fifth sheet of this file contains the results of the descriptive analysis, separately for each word family. The most important values (bold face type) are the median and the interquartile range for each word pair relationship. The last row of each section (12, 25, 38, 51) gives an interpretation of the interquartile range based upon a study by Krause (2002)*. * Krause, M. 2002. The pseudo partner experiment was developed to investigate the mental representation of formal properties of Russian aspectual pairs. Participants were confronted with 25 existing Russian verbs and 25 invented pseudo verbs of different morphemic types (base form, prefixed form, po-prefixed form, prefixed and suffixed form, nu-suffixed form), e.g. *zurat’. Each stimulus was presented visually on a computer screen. Participants were asked to 1) read the word or pseudo word aloud 2) determine the verb’s aspectual subcategory (pf. or ipf.), in case of the pseudo verbs based on their linguistic intuition and 3) naming the stimulus’ aspectual partner, respectively, in case of the pseudo verbs forming an appropriate partner by manipulating the stimulus. Both reactions to words and pseudo words were analyzed, but given the fact that aspectual pairs for existing Russian verbs are certain, reactions to pseudo words are much more interesting and therefore in the focus of this investigation. The participants’ aspectual classifications of the stimuli and their pseudo partner proposals were analyzed regarding their appropriateness. What is appropriate, of course, differs among morphemic types, so for each morphemic type specific hypotheses were formulated, based on a corpus analysis of 500 Russian verbs. Furthermore, partner proposals were examined with respect to the type of manipulation, e.g. taking a prefix off, adding a prefix, adding a suffix et cetera.

I have provided them additionally because I refer to them in a separate chapter of my book (4.2.4.10 Probanden- und Itemanalyse). While the mentioned file (data_Pseudopartnerexperiment_60participants.csv) provides raw data, the information given by this additional file is based on the analysis and interpretation of the raw data. Its purpose is to ensure that the main tendencies resulting from the data analysis are not influenced by a minority of participants or items. Checking this question separately is necessary because it is not taken into account by the applied statistical method itself (chi-square-test). The first five sheets (P_) contain information on the number of participants who have made use, at least once, of the main procedures of generating an aspectual pseudo partner. Participants are counted separately for each of the five main procedures (1. taking a prefix off, 2. adding a prefix, 3. adding a suffix, 4. breaking a suffix off and 5. changing a suffix) resulting in five lists of different lengths. The sheets 6-11 (I_) take the opposite perspective. For each item (in column A, stem ID in column B) used in the experiment the table shows how often each procedure of generating an aspectual pseudo partner (columns C-L) was chosen by the participants. Column M gives the total number of analyzed reactions. Column N gives the percentage of the taking off/adding a prefix procedures, because manipulating a prefix was found to be an unexpectedly popular procedure applied by the participants for the purpose of generating an aspectual pair with given pseudo verbs. There are separate sheets for each morphemic type (absolute simplicia, prefixed form, po-prefixed form, prefixed and suffixed form, nu-suffixed form, total).
