Drawing on previous research on female leaders’ inclination to foster a more inclusive and collaborative decision-making process, we argue that decision making takes more time in a collegial court when female justices preside over decisional panels. Analyzing an original data set on cases decided by the Norwegian Supreme Court between 2008 and 2019, we find that when a woman is the presiding justice, the duration of case disposition time increases. This effect, however, persists for only eight days. Our finding suggests that institutional practices take effect over gendered effects.2008-01-012019-12-312008-01-012019-12-31NorwaycountrySupreme court cases/decisions (also referred to as 'units of observation').All Norwegian Supreme court cases/decisions in five-justice panels following oral arguments.Supreme court cases/decisionsAggregated data from individual justicesCourt administrative dataTime seriesUniversity of BergenThe data has been collected and organized in a data base on a continuous base during the years that the data covers.Information was collected from the Norwegian Supreme Court itself (https://www.hoyesterett.no/) and the comprehensive legal database Lovdata (https://www.lovdata.no/).https://www.hoyesterett.no/https://www.lovdata.no/The Doranoh database at the University of BergenInformation about dates and the hours/days of oral arguments are only made publicly/externally available by the Norwegian Supreme Court for a limited amount of time prior to oral arguments.
