Series Name: |
TEMPA-3D |
|
Series Information: |
TEMPA-3D is a transdisciplinary project focused on the Mesolithic portable art of Europe. It aims to create a new research subfield by merging two non-invasive and non-destructive techniques — digital photogrammetry and experimental archaeology. While the experimental study will give new data on the details of rock art production, 3D modeling of the experimental specimens allows comparison with the prehistoric engraved stones. This fuse of methodologies reveals how the art was made down to a hand movement.
The project is focused on two case studies — the fragile collection of Mesolithic objects from Norway and the endangered portable rock art collection from Kamyana Mohyla, Ukraine. It aims to digitally preserve and study these unique datasets and apply new methods to show their significance and uniqueness worldwide. Moreover, as the two case studies represent similar economic and societal formations, the project benefits from comparing them to reveal features and similarities of the Late Mesolithic in Northern and South-Eastern Europe. |

Abstract: |
An asset of 3D models of experimentally produced artifacts related to the TEMPA-3D research project. It includes photogrammetric 3D models of soapstone, sandstone, bone, and antler objects with modified surfaces — including those that have been ground, cut, and sawed.
The dataset consists of 23 3D models and presents both the models themselves and the RAW image data that were used during photogrammetric procedures. The accuracy is approximately 0.2 mm. |

Individual material artefact |
|
Universe: |
The experimentally produced dataset includes soapstone pieces from Rogaland, sandstone from the Southeast of Ukraine, and bone and deer antler material from Rogaland. The archaeological analogues of these materials are expected to be related to the Late Mesolithic inhabitants of Southwest Norway and Southeast Ukraine. |

Sources Statement |
|
|
Data Sources: |
Self-produced, based on the experiments held by the Archaeological Museum of the University of Stavanger in 2024 and 2025. The materials used include soapstone, bone, and deer antler pieces from Rogaland, Norway, and sandstone from Mesolithic layers of the Kamyana Mohyla rock art site in Ukraine. |
|
Origins of Sources: |
All data are produced during the experimental session |
|
Characteristics of Source Notes: |
Soapstone pieces originate from and are kindly donated by St. Swithun's Cathedral in Stavanger. Sandstone pieces belong to the so-called layer B of the Kamyana Mohyla rock art site and were extracted during the excavation campaigns of 2014—2016. They were transferred and modified following the permission from the Institute of Archaeology of the NAS of Ukraine in Kyiv. |
|
Documentation and Access to Sources: |
Materials related to the dataset are stored in the Archaeological Museum of the University of Stavanger and are available upon request to the museum or by reaching out to the dataset creator. |
