Raw magnetic field data were collected using variometers measuring variations in declination (D) and the horizontal (H) and vertical (Z) intensity of the geomagnetic field. Magnetograms (raw magnetic data) resides in the archive of Tromsø Geophysical Observatory at UiT the Arctic University of Norway. Derived parameters such as Absolute Horizontal Storminess (AS) and Range Intensity (RI), were published in yearly reports by the Norwegian Institute of Cosmic Physics (NICP), available on the TGO website: https://www.tgo.uit.no/ScanRap/GeoPhysRap.html

The Magnetic Bureau and the Auroral Observatory originally were sections of the Norwegian Institute of Cosmical Physics (NIKF) established in 1928. Magnetic Bureau was incorporated into the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen (UiB) in 1960. NIKF was merged with the University of Tromsø in 1972, where the Auroral Observatory continued in name and as a dedicated "observatory responsibility". In 1998 the Auroral Observatory took over the Dombås Magnetic Observatory, and thus the remains of the Magnetic Bureau ceased to exist at UiB. Archives and data were later transferred to Tromsø. Effective 1. January 2000 the Auroral Observatory was separated from the Department of Physics and established as a unit directly under the Faculty of Science and Mathematics and given the name 'Tromsø Geophysical Observatory' (TGO).
