Description
| Description of dataset : The dataset comprises experimental data from 138 L1 Dutch participants who read a total of 254 sentences in Englishti (8 learn-practice, 140 learn, 6 test-practice, 80 test). Englishti is an English-based semi-artificial language that integrates perceptually high- and low-salient morphemes encoding the semantics of possessive determiners (-olp/-u, Simoens et al., 2017), presented in both redundant and unique conditions. Eye-tracking data target the Interest Area specific to the morpheme (IA6/IA7). In addition to the eye-tracking data, the dataset includes basic demographic data (age), participants' awareness interview scores, Working Memory scores as assessed by the Reading Span Task (van den Noort et al., 2008), and implicit learning ability as reflected by the Serial Reaction Time task (Kaufman et al., 2010). Abstract of the publication : Salience has been posited as facilitating morphology acquisition in a second language (L2), functioning to direct learners’ attention to specific linguistic features (Goldschneider & DeKeyser, 2001). This study examines the role of perceptual salience, operationalized as orthographic length (long vs. short morphemes), and psycholinguistic salience, operationalized as semantic redundancy (redundant vs. unique), on attention, awareness, and intake. A text-based eye-tracking experiment was conducted with 138 L1 Dutch speakers who were exposed to Englishti, an English-based semi-artificial language incorporating morphemes that systematically varied for salience. Results revealed robust effects of perceptual salience on learners’ attentional allocation, as indexed by fixation durations, whereas effects of psycholinguistic salience were more limited. Despite increased attention to perceptually salient forms, participants showed limited awareness and no consistent evidence of intake. (2025-08-20) |
