Dataset description:
This dataset integrates eye-tracking measurements and simulator-generated vessel logs recorded while maritime students participated in training exercises in a maritime simulator. The dataset also contains participant-level information on previous sea experience and a table reporting the number of target ships checked by each participant using radar, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and direct visual observation. Records are organized by de-identified participant and training scenario, with timestamps that support temporal alignment between visual-attention measurements and vessel-state data. The dataset can support research on visual attention, maritime operational behavior, simulator-based learning, and the relationship between seagoing experience and performance during maritime training.

With the increasing adoption of high-fidelity maritime simulators for education and competency development, there is growing demand for multimodal datasets connecting trainees’ visual attention with vessel behavior and scenario dynamics. However, collecting such data is resource-intensive because it requires specialized eye-tracking and simulation systems, temporal synchronization, participant recruitment, and careful data curation. To address this data gap and support research on learning and training in maritime operations, eye-tracking data were collected from 27 maritime students during the simulator-training scenario using a Pupil Labs Neon wearable eye tracker. Time-stamped simulator logs were collected concurrently for the students’ own ship and the target ships operating in each scenario. The dataset contains fixation, gaze, saccades, blinks, 3D eye statement, simulator variables describing speed, direction, location, depth, etc., and participant-level information on previous sea experience and and the number of target ships checked using radar, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and direct visual observation. Visual-observation data were self-reported through a post-exercise survey, whereas radar and AIS use was coded retrospectively from recordings of integrated simulator-display views using the Milestone XProtect System Playback interface. The records are organized by de-identified participant and scenario, with relative timestamps enabling integration of visual-attention and vessel-state data. The dataset can be reused to investigate gaze behavior, attention allocation, maritime training, operational behavior, and associations between previous sea experience and performance in simulated maritime operations.
