This dataset contains an annotated sample of 1,199 responses elicited in Turkish and English using a picture description task. Participants belong to four groups: (i) Turkish monolingual speakers (n = 15), (ii) Turkish intermediate learners of English (n = 11), (iii) Turkish advanced learners of English (n = 12), and (iv) English monolingual speakers (n = 12). The study investigates how Turkish learners of English describe motion events involving the crossing of a spatial boundary. English, a satellite-framed language, typically encodes manner in the verb and path in a satellite. In contrast, Turkish, a verb-framed language, generally encodes path in the verb and expresses manner peripherally, in a separate clause, or not at all. It was expected that advanced learners would show increased use of L2 (English-like) patterns. The dataset includes response transcripts, participant metadata (group, sex, age, education, Lextal score), and an annotated data file in which each response is coded for number of segments, item (the picture described), condition (with or without an additional verb cue), type of boundary crossing (explicit vs. implicit/no boundary crossing), and verb type (manner vs. path). An R Notebook with code and output is also provided. (2025-10-22)
