Description
This dataset contains hormone time series from a observational cohort study of patients with primary aldosteronism. Participants with unilateral primary aldosteronism [before and after adrenal surgery], bilateral primary aldosteronism, and indeterminate cause primary aldosteronism were sampled over 24-hours in ambulatory settings using a portable microdialysis sampling method. This generated, for each participant, a set of 72 samples of microdialysate, reflecting a 20-minute sampling resolution over 24-hours. Each sample was analysed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in order to quantify corticosteroid hormones per time point. The primary outcome of the study was creation of 24-hour corticosteroid hormone profiles in ambulatory participants with primary aldosteronism. (2025-08-14)
Abstract from publication Alterations in the dynamics of hormone secretion is a key early feature of endocrine disease. We employed home-based 24-hour tissue microdialysis sampling to investigate corticosteroid dynamics in primary aldosteronism, a condition affecting 5–20% of the hypertensive population and associated with increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk compared with primary hypertension. We found that primary aldosteronism patients displayed a highly pulsatile hypersecretion of aldosterone and the hybrid steroids 18-hydroxycortisol and 18-oxocortisol primarily during sleep, particularly in unilateral disease, with normalization after adrenalectomy. Our findings demonstrate that the true nature of primary aldosteronism is disrupted corticosteroid rhythms, rather than statically elevated hormone levels. This fundamentally challenges the validity of current diagnostic approaches that rely on single time point hormone measurements
