Description
| This dataset contains the data underlying the manuscript in preparation "Microstructural origins of localized corrosion susceptibility in the heat-affected zone of welded Al–Zn–Mg–(Cu) alloys", and its supplementary material. The study investigates how the local thermal history relates to microstructural evolution and corrosion behaviour in the heat-affected zones (HAZs) of two MIG-welded Al–Zn–Mg–(Cu) alloys, 7108.50 and 7003.52. Grain boundary precipitate morphology and elemental distributions in the grain boundary plane, precipitate-free zones (PFZs) and grain interiors were characterised by ADF-STEM imaging and STEM-EDS mapping. Vickers hardness measurements a finite element thermal simulation were combined with (S)TEM results to relate the microstructure at each characterised position to its local temperature history. The dataset contains three parts: 1. TEM data (TEM.zip): ADF-STEM micrographs and STEM-EDS datasets acquired 15 mm and 30 mm from the weld centre line in both alloys. The EDS data include the elemental maps (Al, Zn, Mg, Cu, Zr, Si) and the area analyses used to quantify the composition of the grain interiors and PFZs. A representative selection of the micrographs and all EDS maps appear in the supplementary material, together with the quantification results. The zip file is organised by alloy and position. 2. Hardness data (hardness.zip): Vickers hardness (HV0.2) profiles measured on polished transverse cross-sections through the welds of both alloys, along two measurement lines, as a function of distance from the weld centre line. The welded plates were stored at room temperature for four months before characterisation. 3. Thermal simulation (Temperature-simulation.zip): simulated temperature histories from a three-dimensional finite element model of the welding process using Abaqus. 4. Optical microscopy images (Optical_images.zip): LOM images of polished cross-sections through the welds of both alloys after corrosion testing, showing the weld metal, fusion line and HAZ. Images were taken along the top surface (Top-weld) and bottom surface (Under-weld) of the weld. (2026-10-12) |
